High Impact Practices
High Impact Practices (HIPs) enrich educational experiences for students. Considered hallmarks of transformative educational practice, these opportunities help students learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Participating in these opportunities allows students to make meaningful connections between what they are learning, their personal experiences, and the wider world. Studies have shown that HIPs contribute to significant increases in rates of student retention and engagement, especially for students from historically marginalized demographic groups (Kuh, 2008). The list of HIPs include:
- First-Year Seminars and Experiences
- E-Portfolios
- Undergraduate Research
- Diversity/Global Learning
- Community-based learning and Service Learning
Visit AACU’s website for more information on HIPs. You can also reach out to the TLC if you need help connecting to HIP resources and opportunities available at WCU.
