West Chester University’s Commitment to Sustainability
In 2010, West Chester University’s President Greg Weisenstein signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). This resulted in the creation of our Climate Action Plan, with the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025. Direct and effective action across the university was undertaken, from investing in lower-carbon CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, to committing to LEED-certified designed standards in our new buildings on campus. Faculty and staff train each other on environmental, social and economic sustainability through the Brandywine Project and students organize annual Earth Day celebrations to educate their peers. Sustainability Research Grants have funded initiatives across the university, including ways to reduce study abroad’s carbon footprint to innovative art and design.
The following exhibits feature several other important sustainability initiatives on campus through the years, from the designation of the Gordon Natural Area in the 1970s to the development of one of the largest geothermal heating systems at university locations today.
