About the Dowdy Multicultural Center:
The Dowdy Multicultural Center (DMC) at West Chester University, dedicated on October 21, 2016, in honor of Lawrence A. Dowdy, stands as a beacon of belonging for all students at WCU. Named to recognize Dowdy's years of dedicated service, the DMC provides programming aimed at equipping student leaders with the skills necessary to embody servant leadership, community building, and civility. Located on the ground floor of Sykes Student Union, Room 003, the DMC is managed by a team of passionate professionals who are dedicated to fostering a welcoming space where students can engage in meaningful dialogue and take part in experiences that inspire personal and collective growth. This is a hub where all students and members of the University community can engage meaningfully to broaden their understanding and appreciation of community. Whether through educational programs, cultural events, or advocacy initiatives, the Dowdy Multicultural Center actively contributes to a sense of belonging on campus while encouraging dialogue and promoting awareness of the rich cultures that define our community.
Values:
The values that guide the DMC include advocacy, community, empowerment, identity development, social justice, transformative education, and civic engagement. These values are embedded in everything we do, from our programming to our efforts to create a campus culture that celebrates community and drives meaningful change.
Mission:
The Dowdy Multicultural Center promotes holistic student success and development at West Chester University by implementing collaborative co-curricular experiences that promote multicultural awareness, create a sense of belonging, affirm racial and cultural identity, and empower students to challenge systems of oppression.
