Curriculum Vitae

Paige Mathis has served as the Music Director of the acclaimed city-wide choral program Atlanta Young Singers (AYS) since May 1998. AYS serves children and youth in a multi-tiered intensive after-school choral performance program and in-school residency programs dedicated to music literacy, artistic innovation, and personal growth through music. Dr. Mathis holds a PhD in Music Education from Texas Tech University where she studied with Dr. Susan Brumfield, and a Masters of Music degree in Conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music with Eph Ehly. Through work with mentors Fred Onovwerosuoke, Dr. Juan Tony Guzman, and Dr. David Morrow, Dr.Mathis has earned a reputation for championing the work of living composers and for programming music that expands the artistic reach of children and youth. Her primary research areas include music in the juvenile justice system and Kodály pedagogy in the secondary choral classroom.

Under Dr. Mathis's musical direction, AYS has received numerous awards for performance of contemporary music and folk music at international choral competitions and festivals, including Gold Medal and Gold Diploma performances at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio and Riga, Latvia. AYS appeared on NPR's From the Top, a radio show showcasing America's top young talent in classical music performance. Most recently, the choir performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus's Christmas with the ASO.

Dr. Mathis has performed with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus under the baton of Robert Spano, Donald Runnicles, Robert Shaw and Norman Mackenzie. She has served as an instructor with the National Children's Chorus, has conducted numerous honor choruses in the United States, and has fostered several creative partnerships between choirs in the US and abroad. She is active in the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Chorus America, International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM) has served as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Children's Choirs for the Georgia Chapter of ACDA. She currently serves as the president of the Kodály Educators of Georgia (KEGA).
