Philosophy

I'm a strong proponent of mentorship and often use role modeling to facilitate professional development and career readiness for my students. I have high expectations, but provide an abundance of real world resources to help them achieve more than they thought possible. I maintain an open line of communication and ensure my availability to all of my students, advisees and alumni. I consider my faculty role to be a privilege and I'm honored to participate in my students' personal and academic growth.

Research and Professional Roles

Research

My research primarily focuses on improving health equity by identifying and exploring barriers to care in vulnerable populations. During Fall 2024, focus will be placed on gaining an understanding of Scottish rural health models of care. The current rural nursing model of care used in the US is based on a 100-year-old Scottish model of care, and in need of an update. I plan to study Scotland’s current rural health initiatives, then utilize this information to build an updated US model of rural and urban adjacent care, that includes the development of rural health nursing curriculum.

Recent completed studies include Limited English proficient (LEP) patients’ and nurses’ experiences with language access services, and barriers to care with root cause analysis of LGBTQ+ patients’ experiences.  Other areas of recent investigation include therapeutic knitting as a strategy to reduce anxiety in nursing students (includes a community engagement component), navigating student cyber-incivility in the RN-BSN population, and nurses' experiences during COVID-19 with special focus on the changing work environment, mental health and nursing education implications. Additional research focus areas include innovative strategies to deliver virtual nursing care, violence/bullying in nursing, compassion fatigue, nursing mentorship, substance/alcohol misuse and wellness/prevention and education for vulnerable populations.

Professional Roles

(2017- present) Nurse Scientist at ChristianaCare Health System in Delaware.

In the Nurse Scientist role, research activities focus on a variety of nursing practice/patient issues and innovation that align with institutional needs. Education, mentorship, research investigation, and institutional review board oversight is provided to nurses working on research or evidence-based practice projects, in addition to leading research studies, completing nursing leadership activities and providing support for the development and maintenance of the nursing research program. Independent research is completed via a partnership between Health Equity and the Nursing Department. Research within this partnership focuses on barriers/access to care for vulnerable populations, patient and staff experience(s), and rural and urban adjacent health care delivery.

(2023 to present) Senior Healthcare and Education Consultant at Veterans United Solutions, LLC.

Consultancy provided for various government stakeholders that focus on educational initiatives, research, and public health models. Current project focuses on the evaluation of a community drug disposal program that includes data analysis and content evaluation. Completed projects include the development of educational content and training plans for a state health system, assessment of health equity and accessibility standards to meet organizational goals, and the evaluation, design and revision of a government entity policy and procedure manual.
