Lavender Graduation

Why Does the CTQA Host Lavender Graduation?

Lavender Graduation is a special ceremony for LGBTQIA+ graduating undergraduate and graduate students to acknowledge their achievements, contributions, and distinctive experiences at West Chester University. For decades, students at colleges and universities have celebrated their academic achievements and heritages at specialized commencement events. These moments provide a sense of community for marginalized groups who often experience tremendous culture shock at their institutions.

For students, Lavender Graduation is a chance to celebrate their achievements with their family and friends. This ceremony empowers LGBTQ+ students of all races and ethnicities with the opportunity to share their hopes and dreams while having their unique experiences recognized by the university. Staff and faculty acknowledge LGBTQ+ students’ leadership, success, achievements, and contributions to the university.

Through such recognition, LGBTQ+ students leave the university with a positive last experience and are encouraged to become active mentors for future students.
